• Panda Free AV?

Anyone using it? Would like to know what you think of it.

I'm using XP and just about none other AVs work with it anymore.

For years I have always paid for my AV programs, but now the price
has become unreal, especially if you need protection for 3-5
machines. As for Avast and AVG freebies, don't even mention them to
    me.

Panda freebie according to the comparative tests does have a number
of false positives. Those can be a real pain. But I need some
    protection.

Kaspersky free AV is nice, but it isn't for XP. It won't allow me
to download Usenet message bodies unless I turn it off. It will
    download the headers.

    Any suggestions?

Why still use outdated Windows XP though?

I downloaded their freebie and read their terms of usage.

they want - demand - personal info.

I also especially liked this part -

    f. Report to the competent institutions any suspected illicit
conduct, activity or data of which Panda is aware.

Exactly what is "suspected" illicit conduct, etc., by their
    definition, I don't know.

I don't think I need this commercial spyware crap on my machine.

There's a bunch more of their nonsense requirements below.
    =======

Similarly, for the purpose of contracting and using the program, the
licensee may have to give PANDA certain personal data. The licensee
is hereby informed and gives consent to the processing of his/her
personal data, which is facilitated to PANDA as a consequence of the contracting and use of the program, in order to access information
or services provided by PANDA or to maintain the contractual
relationship or to send marketing information by any means including electronically. PANDA informs the licensee that it will treat such
personal data in accordance with current applicable legislation and
as established in its Privacy Policy. The licensee can access the
    Privacy Policy at: http://www.pandasecurity.com/enterprise/media/legal-notice/#e10.

    f. Report to the competent institutions any suspected illicit
conduct, activity or data of which Panda is aware.

If you do not consent to providing the mandatory and indispensable
personal data requested, it will not be possible to fulfill the pre- contractual and/or contractual relationship with you, resulting in
the product provision not being formalized.. In any event, you have
the right to object to the processing of your personal data for the
purpose and in the manner set out above.

To enable the Society to send you offers or advertising and
promotional communications by any means (including email) concerning
other products or services offered by Panda Security, or to carry
out other marketing activities such as sending newsletters to
registered users. In this respect, your expressed consent
constitutes the legal basis for the processing, should you have
granted it. If you do not consent to the processing of your personal
data for the purpose set out above, you will not receive any
    marketing communications from Panda Security.

To retain your personal data in the event that the contractual
relationship is not formalized, for the purpose of managing future
requests you may make, and, if appropriate, sending you information
improving the conditions of an offer you didn't contract. In this
respect, the Society's legitimate interest in managing and
satisfying any future requests or queries you may have constitutes
the legal basis for the processing. In any event, you have the right
to object to the processing of your personal data if the contractual relationship is not formalized.

IV. Data retention period The Society will store your personal data
for as long as the contractual relationship with you is in force
and, once it is terminated, for as long as the applicable fiscal,
economic, civil and criminal regulations are in effect. In addition,
in the event that the contractual relationship with you is finally
not formalized, the data retention period will be six years.

It's a replica of everybody else's TOS, though it's badly
translated from and to English. They specify data retention as 6
years, which is probably local law (Panda is Spanish). In some
countries in Europe and in the US it can be forever.

    Why I don't use a resident AV.

As to XP, I also use it because it's safer than 7 or 10. Safer
as in Wireshark is absolutely silent when I'm not using the Internet.
(I filter out pings to the router).
