there was one fella that used to write some interesting stories about what the critters in his tanks used to do... like when they were nesting and guarding their eggs until the hatchlings came out... i've got three aquariums here (30, 20Long, 20Tall) but don't have any critters in them at this time...

did you see my post on how to build an aquarium?

Way above my skillset... I just keep tetras... and occasionally some livebearers but the babies always end up as food.

I have a couple of black skirt tetras who's lips are turning dark... I'm sure I've had this happen before when I worked but now got nothing much to do but clean house and notice things. Is this something to be concerned about?

Also have a devil of a time keeping a Gourami alive any ideas?

yep, i had the same thing with my black mollies, red swordtails and corydorus'... the corys are egg layers... they stick'em to flat surfaces like tall broad leaf plants and the side of the aquarium... i used to carefully scrap'em off and put them in one of my hatching boxes... i started with two or three corys... one was definitely a female... at the end i had at least 15 or 20 all herding around together in the tank... they acted very much like cattle and other herd animals...

Also have a devil of a time keeping a Gourami alive any ideas?

i've never had gouramies before but i have had numerous ciclids... oscars being the largest but i did have about 12 various ciclids at one time... generally gouramies are hardy and easy to take care of... best if they are with other fish of roughly the same size (eg: don't put them with larger fish)... you also don't want too many of them or they will fight... one article says one gourami or male and female pair of gouramies per 15 gallons... plus they can be shy so having some hiding places for them will help to keep the stress down...

Sorry just catching this message today...

I usually don't buy them in pairs and have one or two in there... wonder if they stress out due to lack fo hiding space. They seem to be very healthy
then they show a LOT of color and just die. That's usually how they die in
my tank they go out with a bloom of beauty :-(

I had the most amazing 80 gallon tank... had pictures of it up on the old LiveWire BBS web back in the early 1990's. It was GLORIOUS and I went away
to college... I had angelfish in there that were breeding that were as big as 4-5 inches.

My mother, in her OCD cleaning mode decided to take all the gravel out and rinse it and clean the hell out of the tank. Everything was dead within 48 hours... it crushed me to come home and find it dead. Mom didn't realise the "dirt" she saw was part of the filter.
