The Israeli cabinet has announced plans to build a new international airport. Another airport is already under construction.

The new airport is to be built in Ziklag, approximately fifteen kilometers from the Gaza Strip. It is approximately 75 kilometers from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, the country's largest airport with 19.1 million passengers per year.

The government also wants to further develop the airport at Ramat David, near the border with Lebanon.

"Only in this way can we truly respond to the growing demand from tourists and air travel for the many millions of people who come to the country every year," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address to the ministers.

Eilat, in southern Israel, is currently the country's second-largest airport. However, this airport is only used for limited international air traffic.
