I emailed you before about this. Hubs, the NAB, "Star systems", are by and large obsolete and of little importance or relevance technically and politically in 2018 where almost everyone is using an Internet mailer and/or peering with other systems.

At one time, the Hub field was used by certain mailers, such as D'Bridge and possibly Frontdoor to indicate a system to host-route Netmail destined for a Private entry - One with Pvt/Unpublished. This is also known as "Host-routing privates".

For example:

1:229/800 - Hub
1:229/801 - Normal
1:229/802 - Pvt/Unpublished
1:229/900 - Hub
1:229/901 - Normal
1:229/902 - Normal
1:229/903 - Normal
1:229/904 - Pvt/Unpublished
1:229/905 - Hub
1:229/906 - Pvt/Unpublished

Say 1:249/1 writes Netmail to 229/802, 904 and 906. The delivery order if there was no route and the mailer was configured to host-route privates, would be 229/800, 900 and 905.

Thats not to say Host-route-Privates is not used at all anymore, but by and large its not as my understanding is that many Sysops will crash Pvt-destined Netmail through the NC of the destination-network.

MBSE also supports routing using the Hub and Host information in the nodelist.

As always, I appreciate your knowledge and feedback. As the subject line states, I cloned Nodelrpt by K.G. Pace - part of cloning is including all functionality of the orginal program. Now, everything I write (Fido-oriented) is Open Source, MIT licensed. People can produce whatever variation they would like. In this case, my goal is to bring back many of the 1992->1999 utilities and reports that were 8bit and 16bit. This report engine was so old, it was released as a DOS .COM binary instead of .EXE.

Usefulness? I do not care personally. It is just allowing me to get my hands wet and again "reboot" some of the old utilities that were popular - or at least published. I found this one in an email between Lisa Gronk and Randy Bush
in 1995. Personally, I find it useful to see how many nodes are in each region
in the US, the rest was just "work". ;-)

I will make Hubs a command line switch when I release this. I have ran it on 12
years of node lists for Fidonet, and on 7 or 8 other networks. Many of the non-Fido do not even leverage Regions. . . just Zone, Hosts and Blank (nodes).

I know of a few creators of some Othernets that go crazy on the assignment of Regions and Nets... Its their choice, but I don't think its necessary. One segment-type can comprise 32767 entries.

There really is no technical need to have zones, regions and nets, unless someone conjures up a magical mobile-app that lets people participate in Fido.

But there is a political need to have them.

Lol.. 65535 will break a LOT of nodelist compilers.
