• MRC crashes SBBSCTRL after 50 minutes of connect time

From Rixter@1:103/705 to All on Wed Aug 27 08:59:10 2025
Does anyone else have the problem of MRC crashing synchronet after being connected to MRC for an hour or less? I have 3 different windows 10 machines I have tested this on and it happens on each of them. I am running synchronet 3.19b. It will crash after a couple of weeks anyway but it will definitely crash after mrc has been open and running for about an hour. I have been using a-nets MRC chatroom to chat with friends instead. I use restartoncrash.exe to auto restart my sbbs when it hangs up. The restartoncrash program monitors sbbsctrl.exe and when it does not report back it clears the error pop up box and restarts sbbs for me if it hangs for 2 minutes. In all, it is a 3 minute or less down time. Is there a fix for this MRC problem?
I hope you can provide some insight. Thank you and have a great day!

Not here, no. I use MRC myself roughly once a week or so, and I also have a user here who famously stays connected, idling for hours or days at a time, and I can't say I've ever experienced SBBSCTRL completely crasing from it.

If you haven't already, check your /sbbs/data/errors.log file to see if any errors are getting logged around the times of the crashes.

I have been using a-nets MRC chatroom to chat with friends instead.

Which of his boards are you using? Stingray runs both Mystic and Sync (a couple different ones in fact), and I know he's been in MRC for hours at a time on all of them.

First step: upgrade to Synchronet v3.20 or later. That may not fix *that* issue, but it'll fix others, at minimum. And it just might fix that issue.

I will see if any errors are being logged. Thank you codefenix.
I will go back to using StinRays Mrc on his BBS. I figured surely it could not happen on a third computer running synchronet. It only happens while MRC has been running an hour or less. On three different machines now. Restartoncrash.exe keeps the bbs going for me so it's only offline 2:30 to 3 minutes while is restarting synchronet automatically. Have a good day.

    Codenfenix,

The only error in my error log is:

    Wed Aug 27, 08:33:56 2025 master /a2a9c027 srvc 0000 MRC-Connector Invalid message from client: GET/HTTP/1.1

That's all I have in the log for the day it crashed 08/27/2025. I am ASSuming its MRC because it SBBSCTRL only crashes when I run MRC a long time (the record seems to be and hour or less. I suppose it could be a coincidence? I will try it with the IRC chat room and see if the same thing happens. Thanks for writing back to me Codefenix!

    Wed Aug 27, 08:33:56 2025 master /a2a9c027 srvc 0000 MRC-Connector Invalid message from client: GET/HTTP/1.1

This error means you got a HTTP request attempt on port 5000/5001. It means those ports are open to the outside on your server, and some port scanner probably tried accessing them, causing the connector service to log the error.

Ports 5000/5001 shouldn't be open (nor do they need to be for MRC to work), so I suggest fixing this on your router and/or firewall settings.

That said, I doubt this what's causing your SBBSCTRL to crash. Usually "invalid message" just means the incoming message didn't look like an actual MRC message, but it's otherwise harmless.

Are you absolutely certain the crashes happen when you're running mrc-client? Have you tried leaving yourself idle at, say, the main menu for an hour?

    Codefenix,
I can leave it open to the IBBS page for days watching people on other BBSs log in and out, IRC for days, the same for the main menu. I will open a web page in a message group like fidonet mail area and see what happens after a few hours, the same on the telnet ansi side. So far only the MRC is causing the synchronet to fail and restartoncrash.exe to catch this failure, clear the on screen dialogue pop up message, and restart synchronet. I have noticed this on 3 unique machines, all running windows 10 with the ntdvmx64 patch. Maybe the patch is the culprit? I do not think MRC needs that though to run. But, maybe it is causing a conflict. A true mystery. Have a great day Codefenix.

I created a new account on your BBS at ricksbbs.synchro.net and entered MRC. I've been mostly idle but occasionally chatting in the lobby for over 2 hours now, and the board is still up. Can see others in the lobby chatting away.

So... looks like it's running fine?

I'm thinking something else entirely is leading to the crashes. Seems doubtful that MRC has anything to do with it at all, based on my own observations sitting in your MRC lobby.

I would taking Digital Man's advice and upgrade from v3.19 to v3.20 when you get a chance.

And close ports 5000 and 5001. You neither need nor want those open to the outside.

Thanks Poindexter, Codefenix logged into it for 4 hours today and had no problem. I wonder if it is something wrong with my SysOp account? I set everybody to have unlimited time on the BBS so that is probably not it. I have no idea why it crashes my BBS when I stay logged in a long time. I will try it again and see if only crashes when I am logged in a long time. It could be a coincidence and it is something else happening at the same time MRC 'happens' to be running I guess? Have a great night Poindexter Fortran.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to experiment with it. I wonder what is coinsiding with MRC to make me think its only MRC causing the crashes. I only get on MRC in the early AM here for chat and coffee and after being on an hour or so I see that it has been disconnected and when I check the run time on the BBS remotely I see that is has indeed crashed and restartoncrash.exe has rebooted the stalled program sbbsctrl.exe. I ran it for hours today on just plain IRC and IBBS at the same time and nothing happened. I think you and Rob are right. I will try the upgrade. MRC is simple and should not be crashing synchronet. It sure seems like the culprit when I am the only one logged in and running MRC myself and it hangs up the BBS. I do have some of my long time friends pop in and out reading messages about the same time. Who knows.... I do appreciate your time Codefenix!
