There's one file though, that seems not to be reading it in mods\text, the synch.ans file. I discovered that this is the file being used to display the initial telnet screen in the Web version. Upon moving my own synch.ans in mods\text, the Web app still reads the original file and not the one I created in mods\text.
Can this file also be customized and be moved to the mods folder so my edits will not be changed during the upgrade? If not, I'd like to know how I can best edit it.

The simplest fix seems to be changing this path in your ctrl/modopts.ini file:
ftelnet_splash=../text/synch.ans
I have another question; I just discovered Deuce's Lightbar command shell, and I want to change the graphic in the main menu. I was reading the lbshell.js file, and the background seems to point to text/lbshell_bg.bin, but I'm not sure how to modify or to create my own background in that format. Is this similar to the Baja binary or something?

No, that's a CGA-video memory style image file. Many ANSI editors (TheDraw, PabloDraw, etc.) can save "ansi" artwork in that format.
I've been meaning to ask the same thing - the .bin file looks strange in
my ANSI editor.

What ANSI editor is that?

I use TheDraw, but mostly PabloDraw.

That's because PabloDraw is assuming it's a "wide" (160col) BIN file. There's no SAUCE record on the file, so I'm not clear why doesn't think it's an 80x25. If I add a SAUCE record to the file (e.g. using exec/sauce.js -E) and specify 80 columns, it opens normally in PabloDraw.
