    Hi,

Recently got into the whole meshtastic / meshcore thing. The quality of discussion on reddit is of course quite negative. With luck some more of my fido friends will be interested as well!

I will work on gating my local net into the echo just because I think I can do it. LOL

Did you already buy a LoRa set?

    <Cough> No... I bought 3. hahhahahahaa

I have a lilypad t-echo which is my current radio,
and I picked up a 2 pack of boards for the perm nodes.
I'll hang one outside on the balcony as I'm on the 9th
floor facing west I connect to a lot of nodes. The second one
will be a solar node on my friends property which is east of me
and has a pretty high elevation which I will use to connect to
the mesh from the woods as I have a direct line of site to his
    place.

I have a t-deck as a portable radio and a Heltec V3 connected to a larger antenna in my house. The antenna is on the second floor of my house, I'd like to try to get it into the attic or even mounted outdoors, but I don't have a lot of motivation as I live out in the 'burbs and these two nodes only see each other most of the time.

I'm somewhat near the airport in Hamilton (YHM) and occasionally someone on a plane will have one when they fly over. For a brief moment I can see A LOT of extra nodes.

I do have two extra LoRa radios for Raspberry Pi that I was playing with to see if I could send fidonet packets back & forth. It did work (sort of) but it was rather slow.

Heltec V4 are the two I ordered for the other project. The v4 2 pack was $10 cheaper then the v3 so I took a chance it won't be worse. LOL

You can always connect to mqtt and there is traffic there. I just started with Canadaverse and it's not as busy so easier to have local conversations.

Last week on that clear day there were a few planes overhead and I guess "Pilot Mike" (The one node name I remember) was one of them as I had over 250 nodes appear. I connected with someone on the mountain in Hamilton on that same clear evening. My radio is "Zead9c8e" and I'm normally on 6-10pm, I can't leave it on all the time yet due to a cat who has learned how to unlock and open doors and doesn't like anything higher then he can reach.

That would have been a cool project to keep you busy for a bit. ;0 I'm sure it can work but I bet rather slow is an understatment.

If you want a portable node go with the Lilygo T-echo. That's the one I have connected to my phone, supports everything easy to flash and for such a small antenna it's pretty darn powerful. I went with the e-paper screen, but I'm insane for that stuff and even my phone is epaper.

If you want to do more perm things, the heltek v3/v4 boards are just work horses. I'm still waiting on mine as the first one I picked up was damaged in transit.

I can see other nodes out your direction so if you do decide to pick one up I'd have another way to bother you! "Nick did you see it?! DID YOU!?"

Mannnn I'll never live that one down.

Yeah I'll look at getting one of these LoRA sets. Anything named after my exwife gets my interest... for the moment.

The cool thing is it's a fairly inexpensive hobby. (insert ex wife joke

Normally displays the last thing on it's screen util you
turn it back on. Like E-ink, but it's the cheap version.
