Firefox now starts with New Tab after the reboot. ALL my previous tabs
    are gone.

    Any ideas?

Just checked. "Recently Closed Tabs/Windows" both grayed out.
But, yes, history will be quite helpful.

Firefox often prompts to restore tabs after abnormal shutdown but NOT
    this time.

When I see this it usually means that there is another Firefox
Window open. But surely you have bookmarked the most important ones.
and can dig the rest out of your memery. ;^)

Won't help you now but consider using Tab Session Manager extension. It
auto saves your tabs every x-minutes just in case FF doesn't come back
with open tabs where you left off (if/when it crashes).

Thanks for the hint. I am passing it oe.
Updates and simply digital weirdness saddle me with the rebuiding a session way too often.
    Thank again

Maybe I'm paranoid but 'read and modify browsing history' doesn't give me
    a warm feeling.

Show me an extension that doesn't do same. :)
