In general, the best way to test whether a group is still active
and able to engage in discussions is to attempt to engage it in a
    topical discussion.

For example, one might enquire whether there's any way to stop
Ubuntu's ridiculous habit of snatching focus with a window that
says, in effect, "just press ENTER to make an irrevocable
life-changing decision and if you happen to be typing while not
looking at your screen, tough shit."

Luckily, I have not had that, but what really annoys me is that you
can be doing something like entering a remembered password, and the
pop-up box comes up mid-entry and just stops your memorised password
dead. You have to then: a. Check to see what the damn box is
telling you; b. delete said box; c. Clear the partially entered
password and enter it from scratch.
    Grrrr.

Canonical had made some questionable decisions in the past that drove
some away. It's still a highly popular / default goto distro for many.

We if it is within a web browser, then it is the configuration of the

It is Thunderbird's Calendar reminders. I also get the ones that I
can't stop that come from what I believe is from the gmail mother ship,
but the box displays no information as to its heritage. I remember
trying to get rid of it as soon as I had installed 22.04, and
encountered this obtrusive thing for the first time, but all advice did
not stop it, so I just live with it. At some point, it's better to just
get on with life rather than waste more time.
For interest, I have never been bothered by accidental touchpad
operation. Maybe, as I never use it except on very rare occasions, its sensitivity is set lower than yours.

Is this the Lightning Calendar component in Thunderbird, I disabled
that. I forgot how...need to Google it. There is a setting "Show the
reminder dialog (X)" that you may want to uncheck. I use GNOME calendar
linked to my Google Calendar for management and notifications. The notifications pop up in the top panel notification area and do not steal
focus of your cursor. I suggest this option. So this is an app not OS
    issue.

I think there use to be a delay setting which you could increase, but
that was with X11. Ubuntu like many distros are now using Wayland, so I
do not know where such a setting is, if it does...

I've often had touchpads that do that, as well as "clicking" on something
I just want to move the pointer over.

Because of those things, I normally disable the touchpad and use something else. This particular laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad) had a pointing stick

Which version of Ubuntu are you on? I am using 24.04, and just logged
into my ThinkPad and while I was working the upgrade popup did appear
and on top, but still did not steal my focus. Yes still annoying.
However in earlier versions you can disable that popup in Settings > Notifications > Software Updater. But it looks like it is missing on
both my laptops running 24.04. It appears Canonical made a change in
24.04. I am looking for where they moved the setting to, because I do
not mind if a notification toast occurred, but a popup dialog is
distracting. But as I said, at least in my experience is does steal
focus. I am looking is there is some dconf teak or some GNOME extension
that would work. Maybe even some systemd service edit.

If you have 24.04 (may work for earlier versions) you can install dconf
    editor

    sudo apt install dconf-editor

    Then start Dconf

    Go to /com/ubuntu/update-notifier

    Toggle no-show-notifications to true

That said, I think you should update your system, and it is bad practice
not to do so. I would routinely check for updates, and it is simple to
make a simple shell script to do so and make a cron job to run when "off hours". Or install cron-apt for a pre-canned option.

    sudo apt install cron-apt

    Grrrr.

What steals your focus? A notification? If so I hadn't notice.

Just happened again. It was a "do you want to upgrade lots of
programs you never use? It's no bother, honestly". I was typing
when the keyboard stopped responding for no apparent reason,
and was 7 or 8 chars in before I noticed. If it wants to talk
to me, fine, but it shouldn't grab my lapels for something
trivial or non-urgent. A news-style scrolling marquee would do
it, and on a window I can hide.

    If you
want something that steals you focus, try this $%%$##S Windows
    11,
    distraction galore!

Um, quite so. Having Windowed from 2 to 7 or so, I eventually
    just stopped bothering.

Which version of Ubuntu are you on?

    22.04.

[...] However in earlier versions you can disable that
popup in Settings > Notifications > Software Updater.

Well well, who'd ha' thunk it?

Ta, much apprec'd. I will sleep easierier.

Yes, but it should be a conscious part of routine maintenance,
not a decision to be thrust in your face when you are busy with
    other tasks.

It is always and option with Linux if not always set by default. Not
like one OS that forces the update and reboots on you to boot. Always
have to make sure no unsaved docs open...
