• installing TEAMS on 22.04?

    From Harvey Sanenbum@harvey50120@micro.net to alt.os.linux.ubuntu on Thu Oct 23 08:31:59 2025
    From Newsgroup: alt.os.linux.ubuntu

I have an upcoming first time meeting where the firm uses TEAMS. Having
never used TEAMS and always Zoom up to this point, I'm wondering how to
go about installation and testing? I'm using 22.04 with Firefox being
    my normal browser.

I need to have this set up by early next week, so if no one quite knows
here, please indicate where I might find out the info.

    Thanks in advance,
    Harv

Never used it, but the Software Manager contains an unofficial flatpak version.

No idea if the flatpak version can use this test: <https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/4435255/how-do-i-do-a-test-call>

Ok, I've been in touch with the company supervisor, and this is what she
    sent me today in response:

"We utilize Teams through Outlook. We could send you a meeting link once
a date and time has been chosen to meet.

The meeting link should take you right into the meeting room as far as I
am aware. I don't know that you would have to download or install anything."

So, if simply following the link using Firefox default, would I already
be good to go? I sure don't want to feel confident about this and then
the day comes and it fails. Perhaps I will look into your test call
    link above.

Apologies - I thought I was using the Mint NG! I've no idea if Teams in
any version is in the Ubuntu software manager. Is this of any help? It
    seems pretty much up-to-date: <https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/installation-guide/how-to-install-microsoft-teams-on-ubuntu/>

Microsoft discontinued Teams a while ago. There is a snap you can
install. I use it and it works quite well. However, this is not a native
Teams application but only a wrapper around the Teams website:

    sudo snap install teams-for-linux

The supervisor evidently researched it too and shared the following:

"No, you don’t need to have Microsoft Teams installed on your computer
to join a Teams meeting that someone else created.
    Here are your options:
    ✅ Join via Web Browser

You can join a Teams meeting directly from your browser (like Chrome,
    Edge, or Firefox).
When you click the meeting link, it will give you the option to:

    Continue on this browser
    Download the Windows app
Open your Teams app (if installed)"

So, I should be ok to go, I am still going to need to test my camera,
    audio and such beforehand though.

Microsoft discontinued Teams a while ago.

They killed Skype off and rebadged it as Teams.

Ubuntu does Snaps as it is their solution to packaging. Snaps are not
    everyones favourite.

Yes, the meeting organzier sets the meeting uo and the members set a URL
which you can load into the browser. This is from memory so installing as
    per https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/installation-guide/how-to-install-microsoft-teams-on-ubuntu/
    probably do no harm

The connection is some what troublesome at time to get it started. Trial and error seems to rule. Once underway things are pretty smooth.

Also get you machine set up with functioning video and audio.

And that works because of something like WebRTC support.

Not all browsers necessarily have WebRTC.

It's handy if your browser has

OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems (part of WebRTC)

WideVine Content Decryption provided by Google (a lot of lame/useless content is protected this way)

And the Supervisor was using an AI :-)
The tick mark in this UTF-8 supporting posting,
is the work of Harmony answer format. I normally
edit those out and remove the graphical decorations
    before repeating them somewhere.

    ✅ Join via Web Browser

^^^ This indicates the info came from ChatGPT or CoPilot
It is marking various sections of the answer with emoji-like symbols

The AI does not think globally and review the browser
requirements, to see what is necessary to make a Zoom
or Teams to work. You can explicitly ask the AI
for that information, and then it gets included.

The Seamonkey browser for example, even though it is regularly
released, it might not be good enough for Zoom or Teams.

I know that but it is the easiest way to install Teams for Linux and the
    OP uses Ubuntu.
I personally don't care if it's a Snap, a Flatpak or an AppImage as long
as it does what it's supposed to do.

It won't do anything at all, as those files are no longer
available. Those instructions are outdated. If you go to the
Microsoft web site, you'll see that the only supported way to run it
on linux is via the "Progressive Web App" (AKA...the website).

To the original poster: Yes, follow the link normally. Last time
I used it, it didn't like Firefox and was choppy there, but Chrome
    worked fine.

You can also check your configuration at:

https://devicetest.teams.microsoft.com (this also failed with FF
    but worked with Chrome).
