    About the Author
    J. Joseph Speidel MD, MPH is a physician, author, scholar and advocate in the field of public health. He is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Public Health and a professor emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Previous positions include serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps Office of the Surgeon General with a rank of Major, directing the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Population, president of Population Action International (PAI), directing the population grants program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Co-director of the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. Dr. Speidel has served on the board of directors of more than 20 non-profit organizations. As director of USAID and Hewlett Foundation programs Dr. Speidel was responsible for the management of development assistance and charitable awards totaling more than $1 billion. Dr. Speidel is board certified in Preventive Medicine and serves on the Editorial Board of the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Newsletter. He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications in the field of health and population. In addition, Dr. Speidel has helped prepare more than 50 health-related scientific reports that are posted on the website Catalyst for Children (http: //catalystforchildren.org), a resource that provides educational materials to improve the welfare of children and youth. As president and spokesperson for Population Action International, Dr. Speidel gave more than 750 interviews with print media and made more than 250 radio, TV, and personal appearances including on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, BBC, Voice of America, and on talk shows including Good Morning America, The Charlie Rose Show, and Larry King Live. Dr. Speidel is a recipient of the Arthur S. Flemming Award for outstanding young men in government, the Carl S. Schulz Award of the American Public Health Association, the Family Planning Visionary Award of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, and the Allan Rosenfield Award for Lifetime Contributions to International Family Planning of the Society of Family Planning.     Title: Very thorough useful book on all aspects of healthy living

    Review: This book is great because though it is very long, there are easy to read key takeaway summaries at the end of each section. So if you want a quick answer you can find it, or you can review the detailed evidence. I bought this book for my parents and we read parts of it together and agreed that it was very useful! I also appreciated how well-rounded the ideas of health and wellbeing were- it is a holistic guide to living your best life!

    Review: This book is a most comprehensive compilation of health literature on many topics including nutrition preventing cancer and environmental pollutants and toxins. The author includes his analysis and interpretation of the research. A lifestyle checklist is easy to use and is linked to all the health topics covered in the volume. It's very readable and useful to many different readers whether individuals, families, or students. I refer to it frequently and you will too.

    Review: Tired of reading conflicting--though well-intentioned--advice about what to do, what to eat, how to live, etc. to protect or build your health? In lieu of being jerked around, check Dr. Speidel's clear summaries of research and guides to judging whatever the new fad is. The summaries are brief and lay-oriented (thank you, Doctor!) and organized to address major themes. Keep it handy and consult it often! You'll feel better and live better. :)

    Review: Many of us engage in unhealthy habits that are highly preventable without even realizing it. This book was vastly helpful in a way that didn't feel preachy, highly informative in a way that felt digestible. Each chapter tackled a specific factor of health in a way that broke down the science so that anyone could understand and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. For the amount of information contained in this book, and the incalculable benefits it may have on your health and wellbeing, it is a must read.
