    Nice spread!

While I don't claim to be a racer, I know what a catenary is.
    Does Alan Baker?

So I posted on a website completely dedicated to open wheel racing and I
asked if any of the drivers there had ever heard "catenary" used in
    relation to racing?

Here's what I heard so far:

'I had never heard the term before your post. Having now looked it up I
know why, it's clearly not the optimal racing line through any curve I'm
    aware of!'

    And:

'The only use of the term I’m aware of is in fabric manufacturing, like tents and awnings. How that relates to corner lines, I have some ideas
all equalling a valued total of Zip.

Let the guy think whatever the H he wants, sounds like he will either
way — and perhaps *especially* when you prove him wrong.

I finally, recently rid myself of a “friend” like this. He insisted
since sunset comes earlier in the winter, doesn’t that mean it drops
    faster relative to summer?

I explained this is a constant determined by silly stuff like orbits and
other things unrelated to having a flat earth (LOL), but on he went…'

And this last from a racer who's been in the game a LONG time:

'38 years in this game and never have I heard that word used by anyone.

I bet your "friend" reads a lot of books.
    😉'

It’s clear Arlen has gotten under your skin now that you need others to validate your position.

    On the contrary.

    I'm amused by his cowardic.

Maybe the racing club wasn’t a good source for this and instead a mathematician would have been better. My guess is this is relevant in
models when performing calculations for simulations. The actual mechanics
of curve management are mostly second nature to people once they learn some basic concepts and gain some experience.

    1. I didn't ask at a racing CLUB.

    2. Do you have any idea how diverse the people who go road racing are?
