was available on top of other Unix flavors, e.g. X Window. But they

while the guys at WineHQ have had a helluva hard time over the last 30
years trying to complete their mission to clone Windows functionality.

In retrospect a great decision, actually. An open source Unix-clone
running on various platforms for free is a cool thing for the world to
have. The way GuhNoo and the Linux kernel has been adapted to run on so
many devices and platforms is remarkable.
