One of my friends gave me this a long while ago, I was using it for GPS
Nav only , no phone number etc and 1 app on it called: Magic Earth

Finally got the app working recently, and DL'd the US maps seperately which took a long time. Turns out they use a LOT of space so the onboard 32GB
    built into the phone
is nearly all used, and the OS gives a message of no free space on boot.

I went to Wallymart, got a 256GB SD card installed, had it set that card to
use as system format and now it shows 288GB for the entire combined space avail, but still gives
the no space message, wont let any more apps install, wont upgrade the
    Chrome browser till thats
    solved.

I am guessing this means uninstalling the Magic Earth app, then hoping when
it reinstalls, it clears this problem?

Android OS Ver is Ver 8.1.0 - security patch Feb 2019
as per the "check for updates" option so I guess thats the latest ver.

I had it at a mobil device store recently and he said its a pretty old phone and I should get a new one, but this is doing ok for me for the price.

Is there maybe a utility that you can run on a Desktop PC that will solve
the space issue when you plug it into USB?

CHATGPT says I can try a factory reset, after backing up? I did a manual backup
says it went to Google1drive associated with my gmail acct. Seems to have saved all
    my contacts, texts etc.

Will my Magic Earth appdisappear when I do the factory reset? How do you initiate the factory reset?

Unless the app can be split across storage volumes, an app resides
entirely on the main volume (integral to phone). In the map app with
offline maps downloaded, check if it has the option to store its offline
maps in the secondary volume (SD card). You need to get its maps off
    the main volume.

I've used the Here [We Go] map app, and it can download tons of maps by country, region, state, and city, so I only download the maps that are
local to me, and those that have a remote chance of every getting used
(i.e., all states in USA, all Canada, and Mexico). As I recall, all
those offline maps ate up 120 GB of space on secondary storage (SD
card). The app let me select in which volume to store the offline maps.

Many apps let you choose to split their app and user data onto secondary storage, but some don't. The app dev decides if the split is allowed.
If the app does not permit splitting its program code from its app data
(and user) data then find a different map app. As I recall, Google Maps
let me store its offline maps onto the SD card, so I suspect Google
    Earth will, too.

If your phone lets you use Adoptable Storage, that merges the slow
secondary storage (SD card) with the fast onboard storage resulting in a
mix of speeds. The SD card will be a [lot] slower than internal
storage, so you could end up with some apps that are fast, and others
that are slow. Offline maps don't need to be fast. I don't know if you
are seeing a total storage capacity of onboard + SD card (2 separate
values added together), or one value for total storage. I would
recommend NOT using adoptable storage. Also, once you adopt secondary
storage to merge with onboard storage, you cannot use the SD card
anywhere else. When adopted, the SD card is encrypted, and thereafter
usable only in that phone (unless you reformat, but I'd unadopt in the
phone, if possible, before yanking out the SD card to format elsewhere).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Marshmallow#Adoptable_storage

If the problem is you cannot boot into Android at all, yep, you'll have
to do the factory reset. Any apps you installed will get reinstalled,
and there's the rub: you could end up doing a reset, and the apps and
their data get reloaded onto the phone. When you boot after a reset,
you need to NOT have Google automatically reinstall the old apps.
Possibly all that offline map data won't get restored, but you also
might not want all the old apps to reappear until you choose if and when
to reinstall them. I've only done a reset once in about 7 years, but I
think you get the option on the boot from reset to choose whether or not
to reinstall your old apps. Other than the prompt on restart after
reset, I'm not sure how you can prevent Auto Restore of old apps since
that is a setting (after you boot into Android) under Settings -> Backup
& Reset, and remove the checkmark next to Auto Restore.

What if the new SD has been used as "Adoptable Storage"? That should

I'll agree with anyone, no matter what they've said in the past, as long as they make a logically defensible correct statement, which Vanguard did.

I just googled and from what I found, Magic Earth allows you to save maps
to external storage (as does every offline map app I've ever used).

I also checked if Magic Earth can be installed onto a typical SD card
situation (which is the card is just popped in & nothing else is set).

It can't (which is the case with most apps, maybe all for all I know).

    So, as Vanguard implied:
    a. Install Magic Earth on sd0 (the internal storage)
    b. Add the offline data on sd1 (the portable storage)

It's really that simple, but if the OP wants to future-proof the setup, I'd recommend popping the sd card into a computer to format the volume label.

It doesn't matter what the volume label is formatted to today, but it will matter in the future if the OP wants to replace the sdcard & still use his
apps that stored data onto that sdcard.

My recommended volume-label name is "0000-0001" to indicate sd1 but YMMV.

But the offline maps he stored would still be consuming internal
storage. The OS won't use the adopted storage.

    https://source.android.com/docs/core/storage/adoptable
"If they choose to adopt, the platform offers to migrate the primary
shared storage contents (typically mounted at /sdcard) to the newly
adopted media, freeing up valuable space on internal storage."

I don't know that adopting storage (extending a volume) actually has the
OS start moving app data and user data to the extended portion of the
volume. I severely doubt the OS would even move itself to the extension
due to high performance loss when running on the much slower extension.
It's the OS that needs more room on integral storage, not the offline
    maps he downloaded.

"Apps can be placed on adopted storage media only when the developer has indicated support through the android:installLocation attribute."

This is very similar to not adopting storage and using apps that can
split some of their code (app data) and user data onto the secondary
storage, but only if the app is coded and configurable to do the split.
Adopted storage makes it simpler to the user: no having to go through
each app to see if it can use secondary storage. The app handles that,
but it must also be configured to use adopted storage. I can't see
Android devs ever thinking using slow external storage is a good place
to put any part of the OS, and similarly for apps that need to always
    perform quickly.

"New installs of supported apps are automatically placed on the storage
device with the most free space, ..."

Except the map app the OP already installed is *not* a new install. It
will remain stored where it was. However, it might store its data
(offline maps) to the extension, but I suspect the OP will have to
delete all the offline maps to re-download them. The already-installed
app can stay where it is, but the OP has to get the offline maps off the integral storage that the OS needs.

However, the OP indicated he cannot even boot his phone. "No free space
on boot" probably means the OS won't load, or maybe it is just
complaining about lack of free space needed for its own transient
storage requirements, so maybe it is just an alert and the OS does load
which means the OP should be able to delete the online maps and
re-download them (to put in the extended space).

If the OP can get into the OS (get it to load), he might be able to go
into the maps app to delete all the offline maps. Then reboot again to
see if the OS complains. If not, re-download the maps, and reboot again
    to check for the error.

    Great reply , thanks.

The phone boots normally but first message pops up is the space
warning...it was there just about the same time after all the Magic Earth
    maps
went in and has been there even after adding the new SD card and letting the OS
format it for system stuff. After that, it added 32GB + 256GB and seems to
    be referencing
them as a combined new size which should be all need to be done, but apparently the OS
does not have a utility the user can manually use to correct that message.

There is a "manager" option for the storage, which I turned on....hoping it would
detect and resolve the error but no luck.

The idea of removing some maps I dont need right now seems to make sense.
Then there may be enough default space to upgrade Chrome and install some
    other apps.

I have almost a thousand packages, with well over five hundred manually installed apps on 64GB of internal storage so rest assured it can be done.

Let me look right now for exactly how many user-installed apps I have.
adb shell "pm list packages | wc -l"

    960
adb shell pm list packages | find /c /v ""
    960

adb shell "pm list packages -3 | wc -l"
    570
    adb shell pm list packages -3 | find /c /v ""

    570

The number of pre-installed packages show up as "system" packages:
adb shell "pm list packages -s | wc -l"
    390
    adb shell pm list packages -s | find /c /v ""

    390

That is indeed a lot of stuff.

I was curious on the phone specs: https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g5_plus-8453.php

Seems to say you can expand the onboard mem to 64Gb?
Apparently this is a 64 Bit CPU, the only Magic Earth APK
that installed was the 32 bit one tho.

User commented he runs ArrowOS 10, so I guess you can run non-Android
    stuff on these.

Anyhow, I removed about 1/3rd of the US maps but system still reports
the app uses 21.6Gb of space.

I emailed ME support asking if a newer version would work around that
    message
or allow maps to be installed on the SD. But since this is the last known update of
the Android OS, not much hope something other than the factory reset and restore would
    cure it.

I try to be helpful so I've added some information about your comments
below, where my goal always is to edify others while helping answer the OP.

So below may be more information than the OP can handle at this point in
time, but it's enough information for others reading this to learn from me.

Seems to say you can expand the onboard mem to 64Gb?

That's gotta be wrong. I googled and found the 2017 Moto G5 Plus supports microSDXC cards up to 256GB in capacity, which is big enough for you.
    <https://citizenside.com/technology/maximum-sd-card-capacity-for-moto-g-quick-guide/>

If you have the 2017 64GB 4GB RAM model, that gives you a total of 320GB,
where you can easily install over a thousand apps on the 64GB.

Ask me how I know that.

Note: I find it funny that your 2017 phone is more powerful than any iPhone ever sold, safer and more easily updated than any iPhone from that era.

Apparently this is a 64 Bit CPU, the only Magic Earth APK
that installed was the 32 bit one tho.

It has the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 but what matters when you
download apps from non-Google sites such as GitHub is the ARM architecture (i.e., ARMv7, ARM64-v8a, etc.) which is a better way to say it.

If you run this command on your PC with the phone connected to it, you'll
get the ARM architecture. Install apps using *that* ARM architecture.
    adb shell getprop ro.product.cpu.abi

    This will return something like:
    a. armeabi-v7a -> ARMv7 (32-bit)
    b. arm64-v8a -> ARMv8 (64-bit)
For example, I ran that just now on my 2021 Samsung, which reported:
    c. arm64-v8a

If you want to know all the supported ABI's (application binary
interfaces), then you can run this command on your PC to query the phone.
    adb shell getprop ro.product.cpu.abilist
For example, I ran that just now on my 2021 Samsung, which reported:
    a. arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a,armeabi

User commented he runs ArrowOS 10, so I guess you can run non-Android
    stuff on these.

I googled and found that the 2017 Moto G5 Plus bootloader, unlike the USA Samsungs, is well known to be unlockable so you can install a custom ROM.

Unlocking the bootloader is the first step in rooting, where my quick
search shows the International versions are especially easy to unlock.

The International versions well known to be rootable are the XT1684,
XT1685, XT1686 and XT1687 but others can be rooted also. Most rooting instructions are on Android 8.1 Oreo which is the last official update for
    the Moto G5 Plus.

Anyhow, I removed about 1/3rd of the US maps but system still reports
the app uses 21.6Gb of space.

Well, if it was me, I'd store ZERO DATA on the internal storage, so I'd
remove ALL the maps and start fresh. I'd even uninstall the program just to start super fresh. And I'd reboot. Even without that, I'd clear the cache
and reboot at the very least, just to make sure I was starting fresh.

Once you re-install the app, I'd go right to the settings and tell it to
use the sd card for data. But before I did that, I'd format the sd card to
an easily remembered volume label, such as 0000-0001 so that I can put it
into batch scripts on Windows (since the Android phone and Windows computer
are one and the same once you plug the phone into the Windows USB ports).

That way your batch scripts on Windows can reference that volume label. Although I mount the phone as a drive letter onto my PC, such as P:\>

Then any script that needs to access the phone uses the "P:" (phone) drive.

I emailed ME support asking if a newer version would work around that message or allow maps to be installed on the SD.

Oh. Oh my. That's a bummer. I double checked and apparently Magic Earth can store maps on the SD card, but some versions only allow this if the card is adopted as internal storage.

Apparently Magic Earth doesn't publicly document version-by-version
differences in how it handles SD card storage (portable vs adoptable).

But you can doublecheck your particular version for yourself.
    a. Open Magic Earth.
    b. Navigate to: Settings > Map Storage Location
If you can select your SD card (portable) it supports portable storage.
If the option is missing or greyed out, it may use adoptable storage.

In any good Android file explorer, you should be able to find your maps.

If they're on the internal storage, they'll likely be found here:
    /sdcard0/Android/data/com.generalmagic.magicearth/files/
If they're on the portable storage, they'll likely be found here:
    /sdcard1/Android/data/com.generalmagic.magicearth/files/

But since this is the last known update of the Android OS, not much
hope something other than the factory reset and restore would cure it.

At this point, unlike with iOS, you have every option available to you.
    1. Install Magic Earth from the Google Play Store.
    2. Insert your microSD card into the Moto G5 Plus.
    3. Go to: Settings > Storage
    4. Skip this step for portable storage.
    5. Open the Magic Earth app.
    6. Go to: Menu > Settings > Map Storage Location
    7. Select your SD card as the destination for downloaded maps.
    8. Download the maps you need ¡X they will now be stored on the SD card.

If you want to use the card, as Andy had kindly suggested, as adoptable
storage (which I haven't used in a decade myself), then add step 4 back.

    4. Tap on your SD card and choose:
    "Format as internal storage"
(This enables adoptable storage allowing apps to use
    the SD card for data.)

Now any app whatsoever can use that storage, no matter what.
    But it's no longer portable.

    Good feedback and ideas thanks.

Meanwhile, I did the factory reset but on the restore from Google1
it didnt restore my phone contacts so had to re-enter them all.

It also did not re-install Magic Earth or the maps, so perhaps that space error
    prevented its backup.

Its upgraded Chrome to the newest, and that space message is gone.

Its putting the Android folders on the new SDCard, didnt look but
Magic Earth is probably in the location you mentioned.

I installed the version on Google Play store, which may not be as robust
as the APK I first used before. I only downloaded the maps I will currently use
for the US...they seem to be using the SDcard for that which is good news.

You can check maps for updates in the app, but it would be nice if you could DL
the maps to say a desktop PC folder, then point the app there after USB hookup.

That spec page also had a commenter describe a Moto help utility
with a link to DL it to install to Win10/11 but since I am a Win7/8 user (retro-boomer) it wont install.

So far so good, with the space problem solved I can install more apps
and maybe an alternate browser than Chrome.

I think, for your situation, I think Magic Earth might not be able to
handle the sdcard as "portable storage" but it definitely can handle the
sdcard as "adoptable storage", but I haven't used adoptable storage in
years so I am rusty on that. All apps can use adoptable storage (AFAIK).

Meanwhile, I did the factory reset but on the restore from Google
it didnt restore my phone contacts so had to re-enter them all.

What I do BEFORE a factory reset is EXPORT the contacts as a vcard or csv format where almost any program on almost any platform can read it then.

Here is an example in VCARD format:
    BEGIN:VCARD
    VERSION:3.0
    FN:John Doe
    N:Doe;John;;;
    TEL;TYPE=CELL:1234567890
    EMAIL:john.doe@example.com
    END:VCARD

Here is an example in CSV format:
    Name,Phone Number,Email
    John Doe,1234567890,john.doe@example.com

It also did not re-install Magic Earth or the maps, so perhaps that space error prevented its backup.

What I do BEFORE a factory reset is ARCHIVE the apps as individual APKs. Android is unique in that it's the only platform that does that for you.

Most people don't know this, but every single app that is installed on your device already has the installer archived as an APK waiting for you.

It's too late now, but in the future, I'd suggest you run any one of a
billion of these APK backup programs to save all the APKs off the phone.

Its upgraded Chrome to the newest, and that space message is gone.

This is probably too much for you but I'd uninstall Chrome and replace it
with Bromite or Chromite but it's good that Chrome is working for you now.

Its putting the Android folders on the new SDCard, didnt look but
Magic Earth is probably in the location you mentioned.

It wasn't clear to me how to tell which Magic Earth versions could store
maps on an sd card set up as portable storage and which couldn't do that.

Either way, if your Magic Earth can handle portable storage, then you're
fine just popping the sd card into the device but if your Magic Earth can't handle portable storage, you'll have to set the sd card up as adoptable.

You can google how to do that as I haven't done that in many many years.

I installed the version on Google Play store, which may not be as robust
as the APK I first used before. I only downloaded the maps I will currently use for the US...they seem to be using the SDcard for that which is good news.

    Hmmm....
If they're using the sd card already, then you're home free. Right?

You can check maps for updates in the app, but it would be nice if you could DL the maps to say a desktop PC folder, then point the app there after USB hookup.

I don't know anyone doing that, although I mount my phone as a drive letter
on Windows, but I generally use Windows to access the phone file storage,
    not the other way around.

That spec page also had a commenter describe a Moto help utility
with a link to DL it to install to Win10/11 but since I am a Win7/8 user (retro-boomer) it wont install.

Well, those of us on Windows 10 will be having that problem soon enough.

So far so good, with the space problem solved I can install more apps
and maybe an alternate browser than Chrome.

Personally I delete Chrome (using adb) from the user partition, but most
people use it so I can't say too much other than Chromite/Bromite is
designed to replace Chrome for privacy-conscious Android owners.

Both browsers strip out Google's tracking mechanisms and reduce
fingerprinting, though they're not foolproof (Tor is better for anonymity).

Chromite is more often updated than Bromite is.
    <https://github.com/uazo/cromite/releases/tag/v140.0.7339.128-63888d58b55fab6873bea02b17bd3c533dfad697>

Notice here is where it matters that you know which archictecture the
    phone's CPU supports.

    I just noticed there's even a Windows x64 binary, which I didn't know
    existed. Thanks!

If you are using the Google contacts app a factory reset shouldn't delete
them as they are saved online. On any of my Android devices (non-phones
included) I can download the contacts app from the Play Store and it
automatically gets populated with my contacts. For my non-Android devices
the contacts are always available online in my Google account using a
browser. All very handy when I need a number while using one of my devices
and the phone isn't nearby. Also of course after doing a factory reset the
redownload Contacts app is automatically repopulated.

So if you don't have the -Google- Contacts app then I suggest you get it. If
you already have it then I have no clue what went wrong...

That's a good point you make that I was talking about only the map "data" &

    <https://source.android.com/docs/core/storage/adoptable>
"Apps can be placed on adopted storage media only

    android:installLocation attribute."

Apparently even if the app itself doesn't have the "installLocation"
attribute set, all app data such as cache, user files, and databases should
be able to be stored on adopted storage regardless of that attribute,
because adopted storage behaves like internal storage once adopted.

The good news is that, either way, the OP has a working solution.

    1. If the OP opts for adoptable storage...
    a. If Magic Earth can install into adoptable storage, he's fine.
    b. If not, at least the map data can use the adoptable storage.
    2. If the OP opts for portable storage...
    a. If Magic Earth can save data into portable storage, he's fine.
    b. If not, well... if not... then he can opt for adoptable storage.

Since 64GB internal storage easily handles a thousand apps (ask me how I
know that), most of us won't need to worry about adoptable storage today.

Thanks for clarifying the situation with respect to adoptable storage, especially since I haven't used it since the days of 8GB internal storage.

I don't know "what went wrong" but bear in mind that syncing of contacts is something that normally you can turn off, even if you have a Google Account
    on the phone.

My issue, just so you know, with the GMail app is the FIRST TIME you use
it, last I had checked, it CREATES a Google Account on your phone, but,
what's worse (much worse!) is it automatically syncs your contacts BEFORE
you get a chance to turn that feature off on your Google Account on your
    phone.

It has been *years* since I tested this, but that was the *last* time I
ever used a GMail app on Android (it doesn't do that on iOS,
    paradoxically).

    Just FYI...

It only matters to someone who does NOT want it to sync and who does NOT
want a Google Account on the phone but who has PLENTY of Google Accounts.

Google account on a new phone? First time? That would have been almost 6
years ago for my old phone. It's been factory reset several times over the
years and I've never lost a contact due to using Google Contacts. That was
all I was trying to point out to the OP.

Of course. YMMV as always. If the OP does not want to use Google Contacts
and not lose his contacts in a factory reset I'm sure there are other ways
you can point out to him. Perhaps you already did and I missed it...
