    Remember Ubisoft calling "Skull And Bones" the first AAAA game a few
    months back? Well, it ain't got nothin' on "Grand Theft Auto 6", which
    will be a AAAAA (that's five whole As!) game.

    Now, let's be clear. This isn't anyone at GTA6 developer Rockstar (or
    GTA6 publisher Take Two, for that matter) making this claim, so don't
    take it out on them. It's Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of Devolver Digital
    (an Indie publisher, probably most famous for games like "Hotline
    Miami" and "The Talos Principle") that's said this.* And he said so
    not necessarily meaning the quality of the game, but that something
    like GTA6 will likely have significant 'cultural impact' in the way
    few other games manage. A comparison which is probably going to be
    correct.

    Still, the whole "ranking by As" thing is pretty silly, and after
    Ubisoft's AAAA gaffe, even more ridiculous. I mean, I don't think he's
    wrong; in fact, if we had to rank games by number of letters, the GTA
    series probably _would_ qualify for AAAAA ranking. Not only have they
    been huge, extremely detailed worlds, not only have they been fun to
    play, not only have they maintained popularity years after release...
    but they have had significant impact on the hobby itself. (I mean,
    just thing of the kerfuffle the "Hot Coffee" mod created!). It's the
    rare big-publisher game that, in my opinion, still deserves its
    "triple A" ranking.

    In fact, on the whole, I find that "AAA" publisher games rarely are
    worth the price they're asking anymore. Something coming from
    Activision or Ubisoft or EA; well, _maybe_ I'll play it (okay,
    probably not if from those first two) but it's not going to be first
    on the list. Increasingly it's the games from medium-tier and Indie
    developers that are looking the more interesting to me.

    So a "triple (or quadruple, or quintuple) A" ranking is actually as
    much a reason not to rush out and play. Oh, it'll be a /pretty/ game,
    I'm sure, these titles the developers have spent upwards of a
    half-billion US dollars developing, but it won't be much more than
    that. It won't be original, it won't challenge anything, and it'll
    likely be full of awful post-purchase monetizations. In this regard,
    all those extra A's are wasted.

    So will GTA6 be a AAAAA game? Probably. But I still don't mind waiting
    it out a few years after its release before I ever play it.

    I did but I can't remember how many A's there are. More than four or
    five.

    I'm kind of wondering why they wouldn't market GTA6 as a sextuple-A
    game? Seems like a missed opportunity.

    According to my records, I last played this game in 2012. My opinions
    of it were that it was a conceptually neat game that still fell short
    (haha, 'cause it's a game about falling!) because there just wasn't
    enough variety to the experience. I mean, after you toss yourself off
    a building two or three times, the thrill just isn't there anymore,
    you know?

    But you gotta admit; the game's title sure is memorable.
