What do you think; does the Steam Machine have a chance this time?
Would you buy one? Or is this going to be something Valve quietly
    shelves in five years time?

I think it has a chance to have a notable, not major, impact as Valve
have all the numbers on what PC their customers have and it seems to be tailored to that. The two areas it may lack are the price and will you
easily be able to easily do those other things the people use PC's for
which seems to be incredibly limited and much of that has now moved to
    smart phones.

It's not that I think Valve's device will be bad. I'm sure Valve will >probably be able to release their new device at a cost that undercuts
many of its micro-PC competitors. If you get a new Steam Machine, you
will probably be quite happy with the results.

The trickle of news Valve allows to escape indicates that Valve
probably won't be subsidizing the machine very much, with the price of
the device being 'in line' with similarly specced machines.*

Which negates a major advantage the device may have had over its
competitors; it's a bog-standard (mid-range?) gaming PC with an OS
that doesn't run all your games. I'm not sure the fact that you can
hook it up to your TV really has as much appeal as Valve thinks it
does... especially if already-available consoles would out perform it
and probably at a lower (or equal) cost.

It just doesn't seem like a product the audience is clamouring for,
and that Valve is sabotaging what little appeal it might have had. Increasingly, I'm thinking these new SteamMachines are going to face
the same fate as the first generation devices.

Which is a shame. But maybe its release will coincide with "Half Life
3" coming out. Not that I really care about that franchise anymore,
but I'd like to finally see the meme get put to rest. ;-)
