Just an update:
The TIE Fighter Total Conversion mod just had a significant update
released. This mod adds the classic TIE Fighter campaigns so it uses a
(heavily updated) XWing Alliance engine, significantly improving its
visuals while still keeping the classic gameplay.
[Note: This is a different mod from the TIE Fighter VM mod, which
intends to completely replace the core engine with a modern graphics
engine... and also hasn't been released to public yet]
There's a video listing some of the changes to this newest v1.4
update. Some notable improvements include a one-step installer, better
64-bit memory handling, and improved skybox rendering.

Note that it requires both legal copies of "X-Wing Alliance" and "TIE
Fighter" (the aforementioned TFVM mod will only require the latter).
I've played around with earlier versions of the mod, and I was
impressed... but getting it to install was always a bit of a chore,
and it was crash-prone. I haven't tried this newest version yet, but
it looks even nicer than I remember, and if they can make it less
likely to crash-to-desktop, I'm all for it. "TIE Fighter" was one of
the best space-fighter simulators made, but its creaky early 90s
visuals are a major reason I don't play it anymore (well, that and I
hate having to drag out the joystick every time I wanna protect the
New Order. I've enough things on my desk already! ;-)
If you're a fan of that old classic (or just like space dog-fighting)
this is a great way to revisit the game. Although given the age of the
original title, I'm not sure how many people played it the first time.
