• Oh... Ubisoft (but in a different way)

Normally I use these "Oh, Ubisoft" threads to poke fun at the
corporate shenanigans the gaming company has involved itself in. You
know, like stealing games from players who bought them legally, or
pushing NFTs, or just good old sexual harassment writ large in the
office. The sort of nonsense that deserves critique.

But this isn't that sort of post.

Rather, it's a sad goodbye to Claude Guillemot, the founder and CEO of
Ubisoft, who recently died in a plane crash. Because while there was a
lot I disliked about the man, I take no happiness in his death, and I
also think that there is a lot of good he could take credit for. He
built his little gaming company into a worldwide behemoth, and he
presided over the creation of numerous beloved IPs. Ubisoft was one of
France's premier publishers. These are accomplishments that ought to
be celebrated, even if they were sometimes tainted by less savory
decisions. The gaming industry would be a much different --and I think
in some ways, worse-- place if it weren't for Ubisoft.

So for at least this one day, I'll make peace with the Guillemots and
Ubisoft, and tip my hat to all the positives they have done for us.
Thank you Claude, for bringing some joy into this world.

(we'll discuss all your evils in another post ;-)

I think Ubisoft has been over-demonized. Maybe they get a hard rap
because they were the first of many to institutionalize host programs
that you had to log into to play their games, but they have done some enterprising video games. Such as taking a stab at Heroes of Might &
Magic and are now co-publisher to Olden Era which is critically acclaimed.

Do you have anything against them other than them having a site to log
into to run the software? Rockstar Games is just as bad and I don't hear
you fucking them over with your words.

I can't even play GTA 4 on my main Steam account. I could use my backup
Steam but I make it a point not to remember the password or ever use it, preferring to just buy any games that I have there on my main account, excepting that I can't play GTA 4, which is a shame, because it's about
where I am in the series. I've been through GTA 3 three times now, each
time stopping at the boat quest, paparazzi storm quest. It's a fucked quest.

The stupid paparazzi asshole is too smart. In the first two, I struggled
to stay behind the paparazzi. In the third, I got ahead of the paparazzi
and the douche bag did a 180 and went back to the original dock. I
really enjoy GTA 4, and want to get into it because Spalls said bowling
isn't necessary for the win even though more tha one walk through says
it is. I believe Spalls, however, but I'm not going to go back to my
backup Steam account just to play GTA 4.

Rockstar did a way worse job on this than Ubisoft, rightfully demonize
them at least equally to Ubisoft.

He was taken to the temple and his body laid out for resurrection, but
the priests unfortunately turned him to ash. What a sad accident. The
party doesn't have enough to pay for another resurrection.
