Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 October 30 [2]See Explanation. Drudis & [4]Don Goldman Explanation: The [5]Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby [6]starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all [7]astronomical nebulas. Here, [8]glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an [9]immense interstellar [10]molecular cloud only 1500 [11]light-years away. In the [12]featured deep image in [13]assigned colors highlighted by emission in [14]oxygen and [15]hydrogen, wisps and sheets of [16]dust and gas are particularly evident. The [17]Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the [18]easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular [19]constellation [20]Orion. In addition to housing a bright [21]open cluster of stars known as the [22]Trapezium, the [23]Orion Nebula contains many [24]stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain much [25]hydrogen gas, hot young stars, [26]proplyds, and [27]stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as [28]M42, the [29]Orion Nebula spans about 40 [30]light years and is located in the same [31]spiral arm of [32]our Galaxy as the [33]Sun.
