Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2020 January 21 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/hgzGET6owYk?rel=0 Parker: Sounds of the Solar Wind Video Credit: [3]NASA, [4]JHUAPL, [5]Naval Research Lab, [6]Parker Solar Probe; Processing: [7]Avi Solomon Explanation: What does the solar wind sound like? A [8]wind of fast moving particles blows out from [9]our Sun, and although [10]space transmits sound poorly, particle impact and variable-field data from NASA's near-Sun [11]Parker Solar Probe is being translated into [12]sound. The disarming audio track of the featured video recounts several of [13]these reverberations, including spooky-sounding [14]Langmuir Waves (heard first), hurricane-sounding [15]Whistler [16]Mode Waves (heard next), and hard-to-describe [17]Dispersive [18]Chirping Waves (heard last). Also impressive is the video's time-lapse visual track which shows [19]Parker's view to the side of its sun shield, and where the planets [20]Earth, [21]Jupiter, [22]Mercury and [23]Venus appear in succession, interspersed with bursts of [24]powerful cosmic rays impacting the imager. The nature of the solar wind near Mercury is [25]surprisingly different from near the Earth, and [26]much study is underway to better understand the differences.
