Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2020 February 16 [2]See Explanation. NGC 2392: Double-Shelled Planetary Nebula Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]ESA, [5]Hubble, [6]Chandra; Processing & [7]License: [8]Judy Schmidt Explanation: To some, this huge nebula resembles a person's head surrounded by a [9]parka hood. In 1787, astronomer [10]William Herschel discovered this unusual planetary nebula: [11]NGC 2392. More recently, the [12]Hubble Space Telescope imaged the nebula in [13]visible light, while the nebula was also [14]imaged in X-rays by the [15]Chandra X-ray Observatory. The [16]featured combined visible-X ray image, shows [17]X-rays emitted by [18]central hot gas in pink. The [19]nebula displays gas clouds so complex they are [20]not fully understood. [21]NGC 2392 is a double-shelled [22]planetary nebula, with the more distant gas having composed the outer layers of a [23]Sun-like star only 10,000 years ago. The outer shell contains unusual [24]light-year long orange filaments. The inner filaments visible are being ejected by strong [25]wind of particles from the central star. The [26]NGC 2392 Nebula spans about 1/3 of a light year and lies in our [27]Milky Way Galaxy, about 3,000 light years distant, toward the constellation of the Twins ([28]Gemini).
