¿ Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2020 June 1 [2]See Explanation. The Lively Center of the Lagoon Nebula Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]ESA, [5]Hubble; Processing & Copyright: [6]Diego Gravinese Explanation: The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a [7]whirlwind of spectacular star formation. Visible near the image center, at least two long funnel-shaped clouds, each roughly half a [8]light-year long, have been formed by extreme [9]stellar winds and intense [10]energetic starlight. A tremendously bright nearby star, [11]Hershel 36, lights the area. Vast walls of [12]dust hide and [13]redden other hot young stars. As energy from these stars pours into the [14]cool dust and gas, large temperature differences in [15]adjoining regions can be created generating [16]shearing winds which may cause the [17]funnels. [18]This picture, spanning about 15 light years, features two colors detected by the [19]orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. The [20]Lagoon Nebula, also known as [21]>M8, lies about 5000 [22]light years distant toward the [23]constellation of the Archer [24]Sagittarius.
