ż Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 May 4 [2]A picture of the International Space Station crossing the Sun. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Space Station, Solar Prominences, Sun Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Mehmet Ergušn Explanation: [4]That's no sunspot. It's the [5]International Space Station (ISS) caught passing in front of the Sun. [6]Sunspots, individually, have a dark central [7]umbra, a lighter surrounding [8]penumbra, and [9]no Dragon capsules attached. By contrast, the [10]ISS is a complex and multi-spired mechanism, one of the largest and most [11]complicated spacecraft ever created by [12]humanity. Also, [13]sunspots circle the [14]Sun, whereas the [15]ISS orbits the [16]Earth. Transiting the Sun is not very unusual for the [17]ISS, which orbits the Earth about every 90 minutes, but getting one's location, timing and equipment just right for a [18]great image is rare. The [19]featured picture combined three images all taken from the same location and at nearly the same time. One image -- overexposed -- captured the faint [20]prominences seen across the top of the Sun, a second image -- underexposed -- captured the complex texture of the [21]Sun's chromosphere, while the third image -- the hardest to get -- captured the space station as it [22]shot across the Sun in a fraction of a second. [23]Close inspection of the space station's [24]silhouette even reveals a docked [25]Dragon Crew capsule.
