Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 December 26 [2]The featured image shows the James Web Space Telescope as it appeared just after release by the upper stage of an Arianespace rocket launched from French Guiana yesterday, December 25 Please see the explanation for more detailed information. James Webb Space Telescope over Earth Image Credit: [3]Arianespace, [4]ESA, [5]NASA, [6]CSA, [7]CNES Explanation: There's a big new telescope in space. This one, the [8]James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), not only has a [9]mirror over five times larger than [10]Hubble's in area, but can see better in [11]infrared light. The [12]featured picture shows JWST high above the Earth just after being released by the upper stage of an [13]Ariane V rocket, [14]launched yesterday from [15]French Guiana. Over the next month, [16]JWST will move out near the [17]Sun-Earth L2 point where it will co-orbit the Sun with the Earth. During this time and for the next five months, [18]JWST will unravel its [19]segmented mirror and an array of sophisticated scientific [20]instruments -- and test them. If all goes well, [21]JWST will start examining [22]galaxies across the universe and [23]planets orbiting stars across our [24]Milky Way Galaxy in the summer of 2022.
