Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 May 24 [2]The featured image shows the Rho Ophiuchi gas clouds with a the Moon in total lunar eclipse to the right. Also in the frame are a bright meteor and the part of the central band of our Milky Way galaxy. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Deep Sky Behind an Eclipsed Moon Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Andrei Ionut Dascalu Explanation: The plan was to capture a picturesque part of the sky that was hosting an unusual guest. The result included a bonus — an additional and unexpected guest. The beautiful background features part of the central band of our [4]Milky Way galaxy on the far left, and the [5]colorful clouds of [6]Rho Ophiuchi in the image center. The unusual guest, a dimmed and [7]reddened Moon on the right, was expected because the image was taken during last week’s [8]total lunar eclipse. The timing had to be right because [9]the Moon — both before and after eclipse — would be so bright it would overwhelm the background. The [10]unexpected guest was the [11]bright meteor across the image center. The [12]fleeting meteor streak was [13]captured on only one of the 10 consecutively-captured deep-field images from [14]La Palma in the [15]Spanish [16]Canary Islands, while the [17]eclipsed Moon image was taken immediately afterwards with the same camera and from the same location. The next [18]total lunar eclipse — also quite expected — [19]will occur in early November.
