Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 September 27 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/do4Cb__WhlY?rel=0 DART: Impact on Asteroid Dimorphos Video Credit: [3]NASA, [4]JHUAPL, [5]DART Explanation: Could humanity deflect an asteroid headed for Earth? Yes. Deadly [6]impacts from large [7]asteroids have happened before in [8]Earth's past, sometimes causing [9]mass extinctions of life. To help protect our Earth from some [10]potential future impacts, NASA tested a new planetary defense mechanism yesterday by crashing the robotic [11]Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft into [12]Dimorphos, a small asteroid spanning about 170-meters across. As shown in the [13]featured video, the impact was a success. Ideally, if impacted early enough, even the kick from a small spacecraft can deflect a large [14]asteroid enough to [15]miss the Earth. In the video, [16]DART is seen in a time-lapse video first passing larger [17]Didymos, on the left, and then approaching the smaller [18]Dimorphos. Although the video ends abruptly with DART's crash, observations monitoring the changed orbit of Dimorphos -- from [19]spacecraft and telescopes around the world -- [20]have just [21]begun.
