Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 October 23 [2]The featured image shows a landscape of narrow triangular rocks below a night sky that features the band of the Milky Way arching overhead. Connecting the land to the sky is a bright of diffuse zodiacal light. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Milky Way and Zodiacal Light over Australian Pinnacles Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Jingyi Zhang Explanation: What strange world is this? [4]E[5]a[6]r[7]t[8]h. In the foreground of the featured image are the [9]Pinnacles, unusual rock spires in [10]Nambung National Park in Western [11]Australia. Made of ancient sea shells ([12]limestone), how these human-sized [13]picturesque spires formed remains a [14]topic of research. The [15]picturesque panorama was taken in 2017 September. A ray of [16]zodiacal light, sunlight reflected by dust grains orbiting between the planets in the [17]Solar System, rises from the horizon near the image center. Arching across the top is the central band of our [18]Milky Way Galaxy. The planets [19]Jupiter and [20]Saturn, as well as several famous [21]stars are also visible in the background night sky.
