Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 October 30 [2]The featured image shows steam rising from several separated vents at Hverir, a geothermally active field in Iceland. Green aurora rage in the background. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Night on a Spooky Planet Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Stéphane Vetter ([4]Nuits sacrées) Explanation: [5]What spooky planet is this? Planet [6]Earth of course, on a dark and stormy night in 2013 at [7]Hverir, a geothermally active [8]area along the [9]volcanic landscape in northeastern [10]Iceland. Triggered by solar activity, [11]geomagnetic storms produced the [12]auroral display in the starry night sky. The ghostly towers of steam and gas are venting [13]from fumaroles and danced against the eerie greenish light. For now, auroral apparitions are increasing as [14]our Sun approaches a [15]maximum in its 11 year solar activity cycle. And pretty soon, [16]ghostly [17]shapes may [18]dance in your neighborhood too.
