Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 March 7 [2]A galaxy is pictured that appears mostly blue and white with a prominent bar across its center. The galaxy is the LMC, and thousands of dim stars from our Milky Way, in the foreground, complete the frame. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Deep Field: The Large Magellanic Cloud Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Yuri Beletsky ([4]Carnegie [5]Las Campanas Observatory, [6]TWAN) Explanation: Is this a [7]spiral galaxy? No. Actually, it is the [8]Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the largest [9]satellite galaxy of our own [10]Milky Way Galaxy. The [11]LMC is [12]classified as a dwarf [13]irregular galaxy because of its normally [14]chaotic appearance. In this deep and wide exposure, however, the full extent of the [15]LMC becomes visible. Surprisingly, during longer exposures, the [16]LMC begins to resemble a [17]barred spiral galaxy. The [18]Large Magellanic Cloud lies only about 180,000 [19]light-years distant towards the constellation of the [20]Dolphinfish ([21]Dorado). Spanning about 15,000 light-years, the LMC was the site of [22]SN1987A, the brightest and closest [23]supernova in modern times. [24]Together with the [25]Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the LMC can [26]be seen in Earth's southern hemisphere with the unaided eye.
