Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 August 1 [2]The edge of the Sun is shown sporting a large gaseous prominence that looks like a science-fiction alien. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Monster Solar Prominence Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Mike [4]Wenz Explanation: The monsters that live on the Sun are not like us. They are larger than the [5]Earth and made of gas hotter than in any [6]teapot. They have no eyes, but at times, [7]many tentacles. They [8]float. Usually, they slowly change shape and just [9]fade back onto the Sun over about a month. Sometimes, though, they [10]suddenly explode and [11]unleash energetic particles into the Solar System that can attack the Earth. Pictured is a [12]huge solar prominence imaged almost two weeks ago in the [13]light of hydrogen. Captured by a small telescope in [14]Gilbert, [15]Arizona, [16]USA, the [17]monster[18]esque plume of gas was held aloft by the ever-present but [19]ever-changing magnetic field near the surface of the Sun. Our [20]active Sun continues to show an [21]unusually high number of [22]prominences, [23]filaments, [24]sunspots, and [25]large active regions as [26]solar maximum approaches in 2025.
