Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 November 8 [2]A deep space image showing many galaxies, some of which are seen in a central bar running nearly horizontally across the image. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Perseus Galaxy Cluster from Euclid Image Credit & [3]License: [4]ESA, [5]Euclid, [6]Euclid Consortium, [7]NASA; Processing: [8]Jean-Charles Cuillandre ([9]CEA Paris-Saclay) & [10]Giovanni Anselmi; Text: [11]Jean-Charles Cuillandre Explanation: There's a new space telescope in the sky: [12]Euclid. Equipped with two large panoramic cameras, [13]Euclid captures light from the [14]visible to the near-[15]infrared. It took five hours of observing for [16]Euclid's 1.2-meter diameter primary mirror to capture, through its [17]sharp optics, the 1000+ galaxies in the [18]Perseus cluster, which lies 250 million [19]light years away. More than 100,000 galaxies are visible in the background, some as [20]far away as 10 billion light years. The revolutionary nature of [21]Euclid lies in the combination of its wide field of view (twice the area of the full moon), its high angular resolution (thanks to its [22]620 Megapixel camera), and its infrared vision, which captures both images and [23]spectra. [24]Euclid's initial surveys, covering a third of the sky and recording over 2 billion galaxies, will enable a [25]study of how [26]dark matter and [27]dark energy have shaped [28]our universe.
